  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
When ready to bake
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch

Method

Prepare for Freezing
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  2. Place the apples in a large bowl.
  3. Add the sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  5. Transfer the apples and any accumulated juices to a freezer-safe bag.
  6. Remove as much air as possible, seal the bag, and flatten it for easier freezer storage.
  7. Label and freeze.
When Ready to Make a Pie
  1. Thaw one bag of apple pie filling.
  2. Add 4 tablespoons cornstarch and mix thoroughly with the apples and accumulated juices.
  3. Transfer to your favorite pie crust and bake according to your pie recipe.

Notes

The cornstarch is intentionally left out before freezing and added after the filling has thawed. One bag contains 7 cups of apples and is intended to make approximately one standard apple pie.
